LUXURY travel: sTAY LIKE A ROYAL IN CANADA At the weekend the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge touched down in Victoria, for the start of their one-week tour of Canada with their two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The visit will encompass British Columbia and the Yukon. We can’t promise to arrange a visit with Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau but we can show you how to holiday like a Royal.

The royal couple visit Victoria twice. The city was originally going to be named Camosun, a Songhees word meaning "where different waters meet and are transformed." The city was nearly called Fort Albert after Victoria’s husband and consort but was eventually named after the young Queen Victoria.

Fairmont Empress

The hotel's regal connection stretches back to 1919 when Edward, Prince of Wales, waltzed into the dawn in the Crystal Ballroom - an event considered by Victorians to be of such importance that almost 50 years later, the obituaries of elderly ladies would appear under headlines such as, 'Mrs. Thornley-Hall Dies. Prince of Wales Singled Her Out.' In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth experienced afternoon tea at property, and more recently the hotel welcomed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for a Golden Jubilee luncheon.

The chinaware used for Fairmont Empress afternoon tea was first used in 1939 for the Royal visit of King George VI. The pattern is now produced exclusively for The Fairmont Empress. The hotel has also partnered with Darren McGrady – a former Royal pastry chef who also worked for Princess Diana for 4 years, so he knows exactly what to create to please Prince William

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is located at the very heart of the city. In 2015, the hotel embarked on a new era of glamour with the unveiling of a rejuvenated lobby and Notch8 Restaurant & Bar. Notch8 takes inspiration from the romance of rail travel and the hotel's rich heritage offering innovative cocktails fit for royalty and a modern spin on classic comfort dishes (the kind one might have had at Eton, though hopefully better prepared) .

The royal couple arrived in Vancouver by by float plane in Vancouver. They may even glimpse Granville Island where Lisa Simpson the owner of Liberty Distillery on Granville Island has created a special cocktail. What is the prime ingredient? “Gin, we all know is a favoured spirit in the UK.,” says Lisa. “We also included our Endeavour Pink Gin, infused with local cranberries. Plus with Earl Grey Tea syrup we thought it was something we could call the ‘Royal Tea!’.”

Liberty Distillery

The couple will also get to see some of Canada’s natural beauty with a visit to Great Bear Rainforest – the world's large and the Heiltsuk First Nations community. On their penultimate day in Canada, William and Kate will travel to the remote Haida Gwaii, archipelago on the northern coast of British Columbia, home to the Haida Nation. The sporty couple will paddle to the Haida Heritage Centre and Museum using a traditional Haida canoe, and enjoy some world-class fishing.
