LUXURY HOTELS: El Fenn, Marrakech

Twenty years on from opening its doors, landmark Marrakech hotel, El Fenn is under new Moroccan ownership.

The ownership of the luxury boutique hotel located in the heart of Marrakesh’s Medina, has been transferred from co-owners Vanessa Branson, Howell James, Madeline Weinrib and Graham Head to the Benabbés-Taarji family, whose links to Marrakech go back five generations.

El Fenn now joins AKAN, the Benabbés-Taarji family’s growing collection of standout Moroccan addresses, which also includes La Villa des Orangers, a Relais & Châteaux member by the gates of the medina, and Les Deux Tours, located in the Palmeraie.

El Fenn, with its 41 unique rooms, iconic boutique, three pools, spa, restaurants, and stunning rooftop views, has combined modern comfort with traditional Moroccan charm for two decades. Known for its artistic elegance, cultural engagement, and distinctive atmosphere, El Fenn will maintain its ethos under AKAN's ownership. Authenticity, community, and bold interiors will remain at the heart of the hotel, which continues to be Morocco's premier art hotel with an exceptional contemporary art collection.

Vanessa Branson, who co-founded El Fenn with Howell James, said, ‘Playing a part in El Fenn's evolution, from its humble beginnings back in 2002 to the landmark hotel that it is today, has been both a privilege and the biggest adventure of my life. The Benabbés-Taarji family understands the magic ingredients that drive El Fenn. With their years of hospitality expertise and their cultural sensitivity, it is a joy to know that this remarkable story is embarking on yet another great chapter.’

El Fenn’s new owners AKAN is the hotel collection founded by Dar Taarji - a third-generation Moroccan family-owned holding company based in Marrakesh.

Youssef Benabbés-Taarji, VP, Asset Management & Development of Dar Taarji, said 'For us, El Fenn is not just an ordinary business transaction, it is a heartfelt transfer. The medina is part of our family’s DNA and El Fenn embodies hospitality, art, and reverence for Moroccan culture. We embrace this house with humility and respect, alongside the teams that have built its reputation. What has been created is unique, and we are committed to preserving the soul of El Fenn - authentic hospitality that deeply respects heritage and people.'
