NEW OPENING: THE SILO HOTEL, CAPE TOWN

Open: March 2017. We’ve listed this as one of our top openings of 2017 – and with good reason. The Silo Hotel on Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront is the latest addition to The Royal Portfolio and will opens its doors to guests  today (1 March 2017).

It combines innovative architecture, beautiful and inspiration interior design, panoramic views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean and a true love of art to make it the most exciting hotel on the waterfront for years.

It is not surprising that this spectacular new hotel comes to you courtesy of the Biden family and the royal Portfolio. Since first opening Royal Malewane in 2000, the vision of the Biden family has been to give guests a complete experience and a luxury stay without parallel.

The Silo Hotel will have 28 rooms and suites. TLTB readers will want to head for the one-bedroom penthouse, the jewel in The Royal Portfolio’s crown located on the top floor of The Silo facing Table Mountain with triple aspect views of Cape Town and 24m2 (258ft²) . Liz Biden, the owner of The Royal Portfolio, has meticulously designed and decorated each of the hotel rooms individually and her eye for detail is impressive.

...creating a building that will be as synonymous with the Cape Town skyline as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris

The building has been designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. Heatherwick Studio was asked to transform the elevator house and the adjacent storage silos, while carefully retaining its cultural significance and creating a building that will be as synonymous with the Cape Town skyline as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris The greatest visible change to the grain silo’s structure is the addition of the pillowed glass windows, inserted into the existing geometry of the upper floors. These windows bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this will transform the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbour.

The Willaston Bar and Granary Café on the sixth floor and the rooftop bar and restaurant have panoramic views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean.  TLTB readers will be keen to head to The Silo Hotel Spa, with its five treatment rooms.

Lovers of art will appreciate the fact that The Silo Hotel is situated above Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) which is set to house the single largest collection of contemporary African art in the world.

“We have always wanted to open a hotel in our home city of Cape Town, says Liz Biden. “The Silo Hotel is an exciting and ambitious project which we believe will perfectly complement our existing properties and rank among the very best hotels in the world. The building is modern and industrial so the design will contrast that with the addition of softer, colourful and more playful touches.”

The opening of the new hotel completes The Royal Portfolio’s circuit of quintessentially South African luxury travel experiences that includes Royal Malewane in the Greater Kruger National Park, La Residence in Franschhoek, Birkenhead House in Hermanus and The One Above penthouse, also in Cape Town.
