LUXURY HOTELS: The 25, torquay, uk

WE don’t usually feature B&Bs on The Luxury Travel Bible but this one intrigued us. So, in honour of British National B&B Week (18th-24th March 2019) we bring you –The Best B&B in the World - as voted for by commentators on www.TripAdvisor.com.  Take a bow The 25.

So what does it take to be the World’s Best B & B?

First off we just love the funky design, as about as far from a bad B&B candlewick bedspread as you can get. Each of the B&B’s six rooms has an individual design theme and common areas are full of amazing sculpture and paintings.  Then there’s the power showers, Nespresso coffee makers, iPads, fluffy bathrobes and free movies on demand come as standard. All of which sounds more like a boutique hotel than a conventional B&B.

Lovers of the vintage Fawlty Towers comedy TV series will note that this B&B is in Torquay, site of Basil Fawlty’s fictional establishment, but don’t let that put you off. Co-owners Andy and Julian Banner-Price are nothing like Basil. The 25 Boutique B&B has six very different bedrooms, all with cutting edge design by Andy and the latest technology by former IT Manager Julian.

So why do they think their South Devon establishment has won so many accolades?

‘We created our own ideal place to stay at The 25 and are thrilled so many people love what we do. We love creating special and memorable experiences for our guests and receiving their excellent reviews makes our hard work truly rewarding.’ Says Andy.   ‘Daily home baked goodies in your room, pillow mist, mood lighting, hand written notes, Elemis toiletries, bathroom TVs, movies on demand – we’ve tried to think of everything to make a stay with us truly memorable - we’re also blessed with a fantastic location, the English Riviera is renowned for its temperate climate making it a great all year round destination”

‘At The 25 we literally took many areas of the building back to the brick and started again.  It was an opportunity to make sure we did everything right: from high pressure showers to sockets in the right places, but it’s much more than that.  It’s all the little touches that make us such a unique, special place to stay.’ Adds Julian, ‘it’s fantastic to win the global award, it’s testament to the absolute delight our guests experience staying at ‘The 25.’

New for 2019, all six bedrooms, now have Smart features allowing the television, lighting and air conditioning to be controlled by voice as well as manually.’

The pair have a track record of success in the hospitality sector, having previously turned a failing hotel in North Wales around, which also received a top ten ranking on TripAdvisor during their tenure. Their five-star status demonstrates the obvious quality they offer but reading their online reviews, time and again guests mention the friendliness of their hosts and the little extra touches which set it apart from other B&Bs.

Added to this, it’s located just a short walk from the seafront via the grounds of their closest tourist attraction, Torre Abbey, and another ten minutes on and you reach the main harbour area of Torquay, on what is (optimistically)  called the English Riviera. There is also a nearby train station, local ferries and buses, it’s easy to be car free during your stay.

Andy plans to capitalise on their recent success and has set up a training company for other budding B&Bers.  He said ‘Having done it twice, we know what it takes to make a successful B&B and I’d like to help people choose the right property and make the best decisions from the outset. In today’s online world, it’s no longer enough to learn the ropes on the job, you need to excel from day one.’
