The Griffin Inn, Swithland

Walking across the enclosed courtyard garden - glittering with fairy lights and centred around a striking olive tree - and stepping through the door of The Griffin Inn, it’s easy to see why the property has collected accolades including Leicestershire Pub of the Year at the National Pub & Bar Awards.

The Griffin Inn in Swithland has long been a cornerstone of the local community. Dating back to the 18th century, the building has served many roles over the years, including village inn, bakery, and brewery.

Today, it welcomes guests with a thoughtful blend of traditional charm, quietly luxury and modern sophistication: part historic pub, part stylish gastropub, and part country hideaway.

Former England cricketers Harry Gurney and Stuart Broad (via their Cat & Wickets Pub Company) took over the historic inn in November 2022, and in January 2024 it underwent a major 12-week refurbishment.

The refreshed décor pays homage to the building’s character with fireplaces, beams and exposed brickwork, while introducing contemporary touches such as light woods, elegant modern restrooms, and a bright, airy dining room with a sleek central fireplace.

The Luxury Travel Bible particularly appreciated the subtle references to the owners’ cricketing backgrounds with vintage bats displayed on the walls, and a playful print of historic cricket images featured on cushions and on the wallpaper in one of the cosy snug rooms.

From the moment I stepped into The Griffin Inn, I was greeted with a warm welcome from the bartender. This friendly, attentive service continued throughout the visit, creating a genuinely inviting atmosphere. The pub benefits from clearly defined areas; bar, restaurant, and both indoor and outdoor seating. This makes it easy for everyone to find their place, whether you’re a dog walker in muddy boots, someone seeking a quiet drink, or a family sitting down for a hearty meal.

While the style and design have clearly been considered with care, it is The Griffin Inn’s menus that make it truly stand out. British pub classics such as fish and chips and burgers sit alongside refined gastropub dishes like grain bowls and slow-cooked beef featherblade. And, as any good pub should, it serves a highly recommended Sunday roast.

After a morning exploring the Leicestershire countryside, TLTB arrived hungry - and the menu rose to the occasion. The pie and mash I ordered was spot on: rich, hearty and delicious.

We were also impressed by how inclusive and adaptable the menu is, with plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available. Much of the produce is sourced from local and family-run suppliers, underscoring the pub’s commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

Stuart and Harry are known to visit regularly The Griffin Inn. Their favourite dishes? Stuart enjoys a Sunday roast with a glass of red in the pub area, while Harry prefers a Friday night meal in the dining room.

Alongside The Griffin Inn, the duo also own The Tap & Run in Upper Broughton and The Long Hop in Burton-on-Trent, and it is clear that their portfolio of pubs is a heartfelt passion project. Their involvement feels personal, thoughtful and rooted in a genuine love of great hospitality.

With an extensive range of delicious food and drink, stylish presentation, and excellent service, The Griffin Inn is much more than just a ‘country pub’. No wonder it continues to win awards.
