The Profile: Ibrahim grew up in Singapore and was educated in England, majoring in economics but he calls himself 'an artisan' and cut his design teeth working in
Anouska Hempel's offices in the1980s, when Hempel's hotel designs were really taking off. In the 1990s he returned to Asia and set up Jaya & Associates with John Saunders in Yogjakarta. His recent projects have featured in magazines such as Architectural Digest and Interior Design, along with books such as Tropical Asian House, Java Style and Tropical Asian Style. |

The Style: Ibrahim is the interior designer responsible for some of the most innovative Asian-style spaces around such as The Legian Bali and The Chedi Milan. The Legian was the first project to put Jaya & Associates on the international design map,.The hotel facing the South Sea, was the first Indonesian hotel that broke away from a traditional Balinese style yet it had a spirit of place. For a recent project for the Aman group, Aman at Summer Palace in Beijing Ibrahim makes you feel as if you have walked into a sepia photograph of old China. At The Setai South Beach there is a fusion of Asia and the US. For most of his projects Ibrahim creates custom furnishings. These have become so popular that he has separate furniture and accessories business called Solo Home, based in Jakata, to cope with demand for them. |
