Once the official residence of Prince Souvannaphouma, this little gem operates under the auspices the Colours of Angsana brand , which is little sister to the luxury Banyan Tree brand. And thus technically a four star stay. Angsana were one of the 'early adopters' of Luang Prabang and this maison remains a contender despite the increasing competition. When The Luxury Travel Bible's correspondent re-visited recently they reported that the staff was as sunny and friendly as ever but that a refurbishment might soon be due. Nevertheless, the place is charming with canary yellow sun-loungers around its small pool and white curtains blowing in the breeze across the restaurants French windows. Balconies are shady with colonial style white rattan chairs.

There's an Asian feel about the rooms with spice-coloured feature walls and cushions and candles in wall nooks. The bathrooms (pink Perspex no less!) are of the love 'em or hate 'em school of design.
