Top Ten Luxury
101 Hotel, Reyjkavik, Iceland

Yes, well, all right, Iceland was hit terribly hard by the global financial crisis, but there is still a little luxury to be found amidst it all. A prime provider of this is 101 Hotel which delivers monochromatic chic in a contemporary design and art-filled setting. The interiors of the 38 rooms are based on a contemporary mix of black and white. Wooden floors and underfloor heating provide the warmth. All the rooms have walk in marble showers while the luxe rooms and suites have silver claw-foot baths. In the basement there is a gym while a plunge pool and sauna spread the warmth. The restaurant features black, chrome and Perspex with tulip chairs and a menu that scoots between simple burgers, Icelandic favourites and international cuisine - including, improbably, Indian. The long narrow bar has white leather stools pulled up. Above it the ceiling is glass through which you can see one of the artworks from the hotel's collection. Is it just The Luxury Travel Bible or does anyone else think this cluster of sculptures resembles moulded out-takes of Mrs Robinson's breasts?
