Heure Bleue Palais, Essaourira
Billed as a riad, Heure Bleue Palais is really more a hotel with 33 rooms and suites that brings a modern level of luxury to this ancient seaside city of Essaouira. The traditional style and service means we are including it in our Top Ten Riads list.
Originally built at the end of the 18th century, the property opened its doors in 2004 as Heure Bleue Palais following three years of renovation and reconstruction.
Styled as an attempt to bring together the European, Mediterranean, Arab and African influences of the city, the outcome feels like the sort of lush digs Hemingway wouldn't have minded hunkering down in. Some of the activities don't stray far from the theme with cards (think bridge and poker) and a billiard table. However, the hammam and the beauty treatments bring it all back to a more Moroccan base. One of the most memorable experiences is a swim in the rooftop - the views (especially at sunset) across the whitewashed city are incredible.
