San Francisco Fairmont, California

It's hard to miss the grand façade, atop Nob Hill enjoying some of the best views of the dazzling Bay beyond. A lonely survivor of the earthquake that devastated the city in 1906 just days before the hotel's official opening, only her marble columns stood their ground during the massive fire which followed. The hotel was rebuilt and its eventual opening, a year later, became symbolic of the city's rebirth.  History was made here again in 1945 when the hotel played host to delegates drafting the UN Charter. Created primarily to maintain international peace and security the Charter was later signed by the leaders of 50 countries - most significantly China, France, the United Kingdom, the US and the Soviet Union. The flags of the international nations that participated still hang outside the hotel's entrance as a reminder. Known as the White House of West the Fairmont chain's flagship hotel is also the choice abode for the US president when he visits (virtually every US president has stayed here).  Guests who'd like to experience a little presidential style treatment can, with the Home Sweet Home package offering suite upgrades, complimentary parking, fuel card and bottle of bubbles.
