Hotel of Modern Art, Guilin

Each of the 46 rooms has been individually designed. Even so, The Luxury Travel Bible has a sneaking suspicion that Alessi and Starck have been shipped in on a secret mission to oversee the look - there are so many angles and sculptures in scribbly shapes. The outcome has placed Hotel of Modern Art - known as HOMA - as a forerunner in Chinese design hotels. Angled at its entrance like a 21st Century pyramid, its roof is covered in grass, but there's no blending it against the back drop of knobbly mountains and pines - it's just too quirky. Most extraordinary however is the fact that this is the folly of a wealthy man with a beautiful vision of pursuing aesthetic perfection. "The fool enjoys doing what he believes is right," is owner Rhy Chang Tsao's mantra. He even named the parkland HOMA is set in Yuzi Paradise - 'Fool's Paradise' - a sculpture park dedicated to the promotion of contemporary art and culture in China.
