Hotel du Palais, Biarritz

Hotel du Palais is a hotel with a glittering history. The town of Biarritz first became known to  high society when Napoleon III's wife, Empress Eugenie built the palace which would go on to become Hotel du Palais in 1983. The story goes that a young Eugenie holidayed in Biarritz as a young child and fell in love with the area.  Never forgetting she took her new husband to the town and Napoleon decided to buy a piece of land overlooking the sea to create a summer palace.  European royalty such as Queen Victoria, Edward VII, and Alfonso XIII of Spain would often visit what was dubbed the 'La Villa Eugenie' and the aristocracy flocked to Biarritz.

Today this Leading Hotels of the World hotel is still a palace grand enough to welcome any member of European royalty...  or The Luxury Travel Bible reader.

TLTB likes that the hotel celebrates its history while adapting to its modern audience with luxe facilities and amenities. The suites have all been named after illustrious guests from the past ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Sinatra to Churchill.

The spa is spread out over five floors but TLTB particularly likes the La Salon Eugenie located on the ground floor. Relax on the outdoor terrace with a glass of champagne while gazing out onto the ocean and beach below - just as Eugenie and Napoleon once did.
