Top Ten Luxury
Amantaka, Luang Prabang

Once the Aman group turns its radar on a destination you know a new level of luxury is one its way.

For this property Aman have channelled the French Indochine vibe in a big way with a redesign and renovation of fifteen early twentieth century colonial buildings. The design of the mansions has been masterminded by the renowned architect Pascal Trahan. He has stayed loyal to the traditional style of Lao architecture, but thrown in some colonial touches too.

The resort is in the shadow of Phousi Mountain, on a peninsula framed by the 'Mighty Mekong' (to give it its unofficial title) and Khan Rivers. The resort sits regally in the heart of Luang Prabang, a tiny town of many temples which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 and The Luxury Travel Bible's favourite place in Laos.

The reception is in the grandest mansion surrounded by shady verandas. Beyond the expansive foyer, the building opens out to a courtyard where a swimming pool is surrounded by mango trees, and lush foliage. Edging the courtyard are 24 elegant suites with louvered doors and private shady outdoor sitting areas. The Luxury Travel Bible likes the Pool Suites with - you guessed it from the name - private pools and, best of all, the two stand-along Amantaka Suites with wrap-around verandahs and their own exclusive spa treatment rooms.
