GOURMET TRAVEL: CORONATION COCKTAILS

Luxury Hotels’ mixologists have been getting creative ahead of this historic weekend and when you blend Pomp and Ceremony with all of King Charles’ favourite things the result is a menu of delicious and inventive limited-edition cocktails to celebrate the Coronation.
The Union Jack bunting is up and we are getting into the party spirit, here are our favourite for cocktails to toast His Majesty’s Reign.
Three Cheers to The King!

1. Claridge's 'Highgrove Gardens' Cocktail

Claridge's has a history of hosting royalty that stretches back to the 19th century and has been  referred to as being the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’. During the historic weekend royal items from the hotel’s archive will be on display and a new portrait on HM King Charles III has been unveiled in the Talking Heads Gallery.
To toast the King Claridge's will be serving a menu of cocktails in The Painter’s Room, very fitting as the Monarch is known for his love of art.
The special menu features the ‘Coronation Cocktail’, ‘The Clarence’, ‘Castle of Mey’ but we think HM’s favourite would be ‘Highgrove Gardens’. Inspired by his beloved gardens at his Gloucestershire home  the cocktail is comprised of Tanqueray No10, Vanilla, Herbs, Bitters and Soda. www.claridges.co.uk

2. The Kensington’s ‘Cornish Garden’ Cocktail.

The K Bar at The Kensington will be serving the ‘Cornish Garden’ cocktail this weekend in tribute to HM The King, the former Duke of Cornwall. Inspired by the two things King Charles III is most passionate about: sustainability and the ‘best of British’ produce, the citrusy concoction features a trio of quintessentially British spirits and wines, including Pimm’s, Rathfinny Estate, and Aval Dor Gin, alongside Bar Manager, Adrian Parrondo’s homemade Earl Grey Cordial. www.doylecollection.com/hotels/the-kensington-hotel

3. The Bloomsbury’s King Charles Espresso Cocktail
The Coral Room at The Bloomsbury will be toasting the King with his favourite tipple – whisky — and their royal take on an espresso martini. Made with Laphroaig 10-year single malt Scotch, pure British honey, and cocktail connoisseur, Gio Spezziga’s homemade coffee kombucha. In the spirit of HM’s commitment to sustainability the hotel have released recipes on how to repurpose your leftover coffee grinds to recreate the hotel’s coffee kombucha at home. www.doylecollection.com/hotels/the-bloomsbury-hotel

4. The Lanesborough’s 'The King's Coronation' Cocktail
Just a stone’s throw from the official coronation procession route, The Lanesborough is the perfect spot from which to enjoy the celebrations of HM King Charles III’s coronation and toast his reign. Crafted by the hotel’s mixologists, The King's Coronation Cocktail is a Martini made with English vodka (rumoured to be The King's preferred night cap) with Fino sherry, citrus cordial, a few drops of peaty single malt whisky and garnished with gold leaf for a royal touch. Who wouldn’t love a sparkling, glittering cocktail as golden as St Edward's Crown?

5 The Dorchester’s 'Sovereign Martini'

When HM Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, The Dorchester’s decorations were said to be the best in London. Created by British artist and stage designer Oliver Messel, they included dramatic, theatrical draping across the hotel’s balconies. For HM The King The Dorchester has recreated a modern day version – TLTB has seen them, it’s stunning!
For the 2023 Coronation The Dorchester’s new cocktail bar, Vesper Bar’s team has created the ‘Sovereign Martini’ made up of Wessex gin, Royal Garden mead, dry vermouth, lavender bitter and orange scent, all  presented in a delicate martini glass made bespoke for Vesper Bar. www.dorchestercollection.com/en/london/the-dorchester

6. Flemings Mayfair’s Classic Martini

Manettas Bar at Flemings Mayfair Hotel have created a special cocktail worthy of The King’s Coronation. Inspired by King Charles III’s favourite cocktail, the classic martini, the team have added Portobello gin, Lilet Blanc and dry Vermouth with three different bitters; Lemon & tonic and olive.
This is a fitting cocktail for Charles as he is said to be a big James Bond fan … so question is, does His Majesty like his Martinis shaken or stirred? www.flemings-mayfair.co.uk

7. The Beaumont’s 'Sceptre' Cocktail

We don’t know about you but one of the things TLTB is most excited about for the Coronation is seeing all the stunning jewels in all their glory.
So we are excited that The Beaumont’s Le Magritte Bar Manager, Cosmin Trusca and his team have created a stunning new cocktail in tribute to the Crown Jewels. The Sceptre is a beautiful gin-based cocktail made with St Germain, Italicus, Vetiver, Cocchi Americano, topped with Pommery Champagne, and presented with a spectacular colourless cut diamond ice cube at its heart. www.thebeaumont.com

8. St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel’s 'Royal Martinez' Cocktail

King Charles is known to favour a cocktail in the evening, often opting for a Martini or a peaty whisky.
With this in mind St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel’s The Hansom cocktail bar has combined the two to create the ‘Royal Martinez’. Described as being Bittersweet, Dry and Peaty is it  made of Gin, Maraschino Liquer, Orange bitters and The King’s favourite spirit Laphroaig Whisky. www.marriott.com

9. The Londoner’s Oysters and Martinis

Three Cheers for The King…. And Three Martinis for him as well!
The Londoner will be serving thre?e unique Martinis (His Majesty, Le Français and Homage) in honour of the Coronation, and as we know it is his favourite Martini we think HM will approve.
‘His Majesty’ is the one most suitable for Coronation weekend is created with Belvedere vodka, Cocchi Americano, Noilly Prat Dry vermouth, Champagne & jasmine lactic syrup. To truly compliment the cocktails they are best enjoyed with two Fine de Claire oysters alongside your Martini. www.thelondoner.com

10. The Rubens at the Palace’s Royal Collection of Cocktails

The newly Crowned King and Queen will take centre stage on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside the Royal Family. With all eyes on the iconic balcony, the The Rubens at the Palace (just a short walk from Buckingham Palace) is celebrating the Coronation with a menu of King Charles III inspired cocktails.
The Royal Collection of cocktails, to be enjoyed as part of their King’s Coronation Day Afternoon Tea, include ‘The Imperial Royale’, ‘King’s Reign’ and ‘Kingdom Within Us’. TLTB thinks you should go for ‘The Charles Champagne Cocktail’ to toast the His Majesty. Not only is it named after the main man himself, it is made with Dubonnet, which is a lovely tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II who was known to love a Gin and Dubonnet. www.rubenshotel.com
