Dating back to 1640 and located in the picturesque village of Inkpen in the North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Crown & Garter Pub with Rooms features 10 rooms situated around a pretty courtyard with its own private garden. The hotel has been smartly designed as the rooms are set apart from the pub and restaurant – ideal for those looking for a peaceful stay.

The 10 rooms, including one interconnecting room for families, are spacious, well-appointed with televisions, hairdryers, a desk and Wi-Fi. Each room has a super king-sized bed with high-quality Egyptian cotton linens and a separate shower room. The Luxury Travel Bible loves the individually designed rooms with stylish features such as statement wallpaper, beautiful fixtures and bold furnishings. 

For the new post Covid-19 world, and in-line with the current government guidelines, a contactless check-in is available with guests receiving their room number prior to arrival and the keys to the room left inside. Rooms will be thoroughly cleaned and a 24-hour vacant period between each guest will be implemented.

The Crown & Garter Pub with Rooms is a foodie’s paradise. The menu, influenced by the seasons, celebrates local produce, with the meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, eggs and cheeses, being sourced from named local suppliers. All bread and baked goods, including breakfast pastries, are made by Honesty Bakery and delivered to The Crown & Garter Pub with Rooms twice daily. 
The Crown and Garter’s food is simple and delicious and includes dishes such as home-made pâtés, traditional Sunday roasts, fish and chips, and bar snacks including mini scotch eggs and the incredibly moreish Old Winchester Cheese Straws. Desserts are not to be missed and include marinated English strawberries, peach crumble and the selection of home-made sorbets and ice cream and are well worth leaving your room for! 

To ensure the safety of all guests and staff, The Crown and Garter has implemented  a new bookings-only policy for the restaurant, a one-way layout to ensure social distancing is adhered to, and the entire pub being closed and deep cleaned between each service. Tables will be limited to 4 inside and 6 outside, and staff will also be wearing face shields and gloves.

Local tourist attractions that are all a short drive away and definitely deserve a visit include Highclere Castle made famous by Downton Abbey, Wilton Windmill, a working 19th-century mill that still produces stone ground flour, Houghton Lodge which is thought to have been designed in 1790 and is one of the finest and earliest surviving example of a Cottage Ornée – a genre of ‘picturesque’ Gothic architecture and the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery for a tour or cocktail making class. For some retail therapy the local towns should be explored as they have a great selection of unique shops including interiors shops, wine merchant, clothing boutiques and plenty of antique shops.

Guests wanting to explore the beautiful local area - whether it be on a gentle stroll, a more energetic ramble or by bike – can experience a diverse range of routes and take in the picturesque villages, chalk ridges, woodland and farmland. Many of the routes, ranging from one and a quarter hours to five and a half hours, are circular that begin and end at The Crown & Garter Pub with Rooms so a restorative cold drink will be waiting at the end and the restaurant can pack guests a delicious picnic to enjoy along the way.
