LUXURY HOTELS: MOXY TIMES SQUARE, NEW YORK

THE MOXY Times Square isn’t going to be everybody’s cup of tea. A hotel located in the centre of New York which describes itself as ‘urban camping’ is likely to divide opinion. I however loved this modern hotel and its unique style and design.

The latest Moxy hotel is the largest and flagship of the group and recently hit the headlines when Heidi Klum held her world-famous Halloween party on the rooftop bar.

The Moxy Times Square is a modern boutique hotel which is built ‘for the way you live your life’. The 612 bedrooms are designed to adapt to the changing needs of modern travellers and make perfect use of the space available in this Manhattan hotel. The Yabu Pushelberg designed rooms are stylish, fun and unique.

Rooms feature peg boards to hang your clothing and flexible foldaway furniture to make better use of the space. There is a range of room options available from King sized rooms to ones featuring bunk-beds, which are a great idea for families or groups. But the rooms remain stylish and luxury with 300-thread count Egyptian cotton and great technology with ‘furiously fast and free Wi-Fi’, Bluetooth-enabled sound bar, multiple USB ports and Power Outlets and Flat screen HDTV with full YouTube, Netflix, Hulu and Pandora streaming.

While the hotel is proud of its stylish accommodation, the intention is that guests do not spend too much time in their rooms. The focus of the hotel is very much on the social bars, restaurant and public spaces. Throughout the hotel are many fun art installations and design touches (all very Instagramable!). To add to the fun experience the hotel hosts guest DJ sets, collaborations with local artists, group exercise classes and pop-up shows.

There are five dining choices available, run by the TAO group including a seafood brasserie, an all-day breakfast spot, a communal lobby bar, a grab and go market.

The stand out location of the hotel is the Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge which is New York City’s largest 'all-season' rooftop bar and had views of Empire State Building (a view you will never tire of). The Rockwell Group designed rooftop bar features an “urban amusement park” including putt-putt golf, a carousel and guest DJs.

Don’t check into this hotel expecting the traditional mint on the pillow, or newspaper in the morning. The Moxy Times Square has avoided many ‘traditional’ hotel aspects in order to be a fun and versatile option for guests, while still delivering excellent service. There is no traditional check-in area, instead guests are guided to the communal lobby bar for a welcome drink. The hotel also doesn’t have a traditional concierge desk, instead all the staff provide guests with local, insider knowledge. The idea behind this is that as the staff live in the city, they can provide guests with the best, up-to-date recommendations and knowledge.

With so many hotel options available in NYC, the new Moxy Times Square is a welcomed new addition to the city.
