Opening this month (March) is Asilia’s The Highlands at Ngorongoro is a new remote camp set on the edge of the mountain forest hugging the Olmoti volcano to the north of Ngorongoro Crater in Tazania. It is the sister camp to Sayari in the  Serengeti  and Oliver's in Tarangire National Park amongst  others , so we expect great things. There are only eight tented rooms (including a honeymoon tent with private hot tub, and a family tent.). The inspiration for the canvas-and-glass domed suites was rounded shape of the traditional Massai Boma.  The camp has views of both the sunrise and the sunset and of the Gol Mountains.  Each igloo-like tent has an en-suite bathroom,  hot running water and  comfortable beds. 

The famous Ngorongoro Crater is easily accessible from camp.  The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the jewel in Tanzania’s crown with around 25 000 large animals and a wide range of bird species. The area is home to leopard, buffalo and elephant.  Visitors will be able to follow ancient Maasai trails to the summit of the Olmoti crater or go on Empakaai Crater hikes and visit local communities to catch a glimpse into the traditional Maasai way little changed in East Africa for centuries.

Early morning game drives make for hungry returning guests so it is good to know that hearty, homemade meals use fresh, organic ingredients and supplies sourced from the Karatu area, just outside Ngorongoro (communities in the crater are not permitted to grow crops as this is a protected area). There is option of a picnic or hot lunch served down in the crater itself.
