We’ve been walking pass the closed signs on this one for a while anticipating the changes and we’re glad to report that the old “basement” space near gate 63 has been totally transformed. The lounge has its own signature scent (a blend of lavender, bamboo, green tea, jasmine) which is a nice touch but we think it is the day beds that really win us over. This is really the on-the-ground version of some of the in -air suite we’re seeing on airlines. On the ground they are an impressive idea; a private retreat space with a distinctly Asian feel. Each of these eight spaces has a daybed, adjustable lighting and a view of the runway (or curtains and blinds if you want to shut out the travelling world). You can wash that same world away in 14 spacious limestone and timber shower suites. There is also spa space for head and shoulder massages.
Different music is played in the various different zones in the lounge and the furniture chosen is more like the kind you’d find in a boutique hotel lobby than in a more industrial space (although we do have soft spot for those solus chairs in The Wing). There is, as you’d expect a well -stocked bar with some well-chosen wines. Restaurant- wise the Dining Room offers à la carte dining for 100 people with table service and freshly prepared dishes made-to-order by the chef. At the more casual Pantry passengers can enjoy ‘grab and go’ snacks from separate breakfast and all-day dining menus.
Pier First Class Lounge is open to first class passengers, Marco Polo Club Diamond members and Oneworld Emerald members, including Platinum-grade Qantas FrequentFlyers.
