The Lost City of the Incas lies next door, its stone walls shredding away as sharply beautiful as the mountains that rise all around. Surrounding you is nature, bold and bright: in the faces and wings of unfamiliar birds, in the green moss-like grass that covers the pointy slopes, in the 300 species of orchid that have developed over time. The atmosphere of the Sanctuary Lodge is wildly imbued with all the mystery of what happened to the remnants of a past civilisation. Built with an awareness of the environment, it is easy to spend hours inside the wood and stone surrounds of the Tampu Restaurant Bar quietly contemplating all that is and all that has gone before. Mountain View Suites - modestly elegant in dark wood and cream - offer a similar scene with a private terrace. Needless to say, it would be a shame to come here and not get up close to the ruins or to explore the trails to the top of Machu Piccu itself.

Dining on Peruvian favourites watching the patterns made by the sun setting between the mountains. Dawn is equally spectacular. Don't forget to ask about visiting the nearby thermal baths.
