The Luxury Travel Bible - The Sound of Music

LUXURY ON LOCATION: The Sound of Music
The Musical: The Sound of Music
The Location: Salzburg, Austria
'Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start...' Sorry, we couldn't resist that.

For the first time in Austrian history Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music is returning home to Salzburg, where the story began. The beloved musical, which is based on the true story of the von Trapp family, is being staged at the Salzburger Landestheater from 23 October 2011- 8 June 2012.

The story follows (as if you didn't know already) young nun Maria who is assigned to the widowed Baron von Trapp's seven children. With her feisty attitude and love of a good sing-song she wins the affection of not only the children but also their stern father. Against a backdrop of growing political unrest Maria sees an opportunity for the talented children and founds the legendary Trapp Family Singers who went on to achieved great success in the USA.

The Sound of Music

After nearly 2,000 performances on New York's Broadway, over 2,400 performances in London's West End and great success in the German-speaking countries this latest production of The Sound of Music is the first time the musical has been staged in Salzburg. The Luxury Travel Bible was lucky enough to see a preview performance and thoroughly enjoyed and can recommend it.
Surprisingly, the movie and its cult status were largely unknown to the population in Austria and Salzburg for many years, but they are now embracing its fame.
The city of Salzburg is rich in von Trapp history and iconic filming locations from the 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews. Every year nearly 300,000 people travel to Salzburg to visit the places linked to the von Trapp Family and movie locations (TLTB has already admitted to following in Julie Andrew's footsteps over the Mozart Footbridge).
Panorama Tours' The Original Sound of Music Tour runs twice daily and visits sights including Leopoldskron Palace which served as the 'Trapp Villa', the gazebo (where '16 going on 17' and 'Something Good' were sung) which has been relocated to Hellbrunn Palace Park, Mondsee Church where the Baron and Maria marry and Mirabell Palace and Gardens where Maria and the children dance and sing 'Do-Re-Mi'.'

Alongside the new stage musical from 4 November 2011 - 3 November 2012 the Salzburg Museum will be presenting a show about the family at the Panorama Museum on Residenzplatz. The show will feature original family objects, documents and photographs and will focus on the story of the family, Maria von Trapp's biography and the contrast between the truth and myth of the musical and movie.

For the ultimate von Trapp experience nothing can beat a stay at the actually family home 'where it all began'. From 1923 to 1938 the family lived at Villa Trapp and until 2008 the property was not open to the public. It has now been opened as a hotel and is maintained and furnished in the style of the time when it was the von Trapp family home. Each of the guest rooms and suites is dedicated to either their former function of the family member who once lived there.
All together now, 'Doe, a deer a female deer...'
